Naruto Shippuuden

The story revolves mainly around Naruto Uzumaki`s and Sakura Haruno`s new adventures and their search for Sasuke Uchiha after he left Konoha-gakure (Leaf Village) to gain Orochimaru`s power. The plot also shows a more active Akatsuki in their quest for obtaining all the tailed beasts.
After his failed attempt to retrieve Sasuke, Naruto learns that circumstances have granted him slightly less than three years to prepare for a confrontation with Orochimaru, who has to wait that much time before he can transfer into Sasuke`s body. Naruto also must prepare for his eventual confrontation with Akatsuki, who are after the demon sealed within him. To prepare, Naruto leaves the village and undergoes intensive training under Jiraiya. At the same time, Sakura becomes Tsunade`s apprentice, and Sasuke trains under Orochimaru. Thus, all three members of the original Team 7 are now training under one of the Legendary Sannin.

So, this week I caught the first four episodes of the “new” Naruto series. I say “new” because of course it’s really just the continuation of the comic now that the first TV series teased the audience to death with filler for 65 or so episodes. Luckily I missed all that, because the truth is, Naruto never appealed to me much. I found it interesting, but a little cold and the focus on duelling kinda turned me off a bit.
So, I watched Naruto Shippuuden, and thank god I actually knew something about Naruto going in because otherwise I would have been totally lost. As a “restart” it totally sucked, there was just too much previous information you needed to really understand or get what was going on. They tried to recap, and it was helpful if you knew this setting and story already, but coming in cold it would have been a nightmare. You either have to be dedicated or willing to go back and read or watch a whole lot of Naruto to really understand it.
Luckily for them (although perhaps not for me!) I did know enough to appreciate it, and actually liked what I saw! Now I find myself going back and watching/reading the first series! I prefer reading since the comics have more details and I can go through them faster, but in any case after finding myself reading through the Naruto entry on Wikipedia last night, I think I am officially hooked! I don’t think the writer of Naruto is actually a very good storyteller, he’s okay, but I find him a little typical. Reading the “personal thoughts” column in the manga collections he strikes me as a really average and unexceptional person who I probably wouldn’t normally care to even have a conversation with. That said, when it comes to weird-ass ninja fantasy stuff, I have to say he’s darn hard to beat! What hooked me on Naruto isn’t so much the characters (although they’re not bad, they really do act like young people their age), but the weird stuff, which is worth a lot of points with me. Give me something I haven’t seen before, and you’ve got my attention! And Naruto so far is giving me lots of nifty ideas I haven’t seen before!
